Fushimi Inari Steps
Did you know that getting to the famous Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto involves a stairs workout?
There are approximately 12,000 steps to the top of the 233-meter hill where the complex of shrines is located. Visitors that make it all the way to the top are rewarded not only with being able to step inside the shrine but are also treated to expansive views over Kyoto.
The steps of Fushimi Inari are lined with the famous orange and black torii gates that you’ve probably seen in photos online.
Many visitors only go up a short distance along the uphill stair trek, making the bottom part extremely crowded. If you want to leave the crowds behind, walk up those steps some more!
On a practical note, there are no railings for much of the climb, and the steps can be uneven or sloping in places, although they are not steep steps.
There are a few stops along the way, mainly little shops.
If you think you will need them, bring trekking poles or walking sticks to assist.
